Hey y'all. I have a few quick questions about the coral I recently purchased.

I was told it was a hammer coral and it has been in my tank for 5 days. I read up and placed him in a spot with lower flow and direct light at the bottom of my 10 gallon tank. Here is a picture of it, and my questions are as follows.

1. This is the most he extends, is this a full extension or is it still not fully extending?

2. If this is not full, do I need to move it to a place where it will be more comfortable?

3. What species is this? I am having a hard time understanding what distinguishes between the sister species.

4. What color pattern is this? It is kind of maroon and green, is that the same as brown green?

5. I have tried to feed it pieces of mysis shrimp and it does not pull it in. Does this have anything to do with its size?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Ian

That's pretty good extension for a single head; however, I don't think it is open all the way. The color will become more vivid with time. As far as feeding, I have only target fed my hammer a few times in the past 6 years. I think they get most of their nutrition from fish poo and trace elements. Your piece is looking nice. I would leave it there for a few weeks. It will let you know if it's the sweet spot or not.

It is a branching hammer coral. They are more hardy than the wall hammer coral. Most Euphyllia can be placed near each other but some have been known not to play nice with their cousins. So if you place it near another euphyllia that is not a branching hammer there is a chance they may not get along.

It may color up by turning a more neon green but not always. Some are just a more subdued color. The tips and the body are generally two different colors the maroon you are referring will not get the neon look but can change intensity to shades of brown or purple or clear.

Just be sure that the tentacles will not he hitting the live rock when they sway. The tentacles will get a bit longer but branching hammer do not get that long normally.

I do not target feed any of my euphyllia i have several. When i feed all corals they get what is in the water column and the lighting.
