Hey Guys

May be a silly question..however

When mixing salt it's advisable to not mix over 4 hours as trace elements etc evaporate... however what stops them evaporating in the tank once you have finished mixing and added them into the tank?

What? I have never heard of that. I have heard not to use newly mixed saltwater as you want it to oxygenate for at minimum 4hours, but the rest you lost me? Trace elements evaporate? That makes no sense. We would have a hard time with parameter control if that was the case.

Evaporation will cause a relative *increase* in trace elements, because the 5 gallons you mixed up are now 4.5 gallons. But you should definitely aerate for awhile. Elements do not leave the water. Only water leaves, leaving the rest behind. Just add more water.

Maybe he means precipitate?

I let my water sit for up to a week before a water change. I suppose it's possible some things could precipitate out.

Yes apologies I meant precipitate out, i.e. calcium etc..

Honestly with constant water movement and changes I would say is what prevents it.
