I set up a tank for my son. He had about four pounds left over. I thought why not add by the handful to my existing tank sand bed instead of throwing out the live sand.

So I added about one pound and mixed in to my existing. Came home today and the glass was green, the sand bed has brown and I can only blame myself.

Is this normal and will go away with age?

Thanks.

If you did not rinse the sand than that seems like a normal algae and diatom bloom.

It will resolve in a couple day typically. Run some charcoal if you have any, rinse out mechanical filtration like sponge, foam, floss, sock.

You certainly can add sand.....but the one little mistake you made was when you "mixed in to my existing" sand. That disturbed all the nasties in the sand, and put those nasties into the water column, causing the algae bloom. It should eventually clear up.

Sounds like you used store bought live sand, that often comes w/ dieoff that can cause issues.
