I just noticed that the resin for my RO unit has just expired. So a couple of questions.

1.) I know I need to change it, but I have only made about 200 gallons or so. Does this mean I need an additional cartridge of di?

2.) there is a color changing variant and just a regular variant on brs website. The color changing one is shown as purple on there site but mine came black. Which is better?

Well,
I've always used the BRS color changing DI resin, but I rely on the RO/DI units built in TDS meter.

We have new construction in the area that we live in and started burning thru DI resin like crazy.

Changed over to this 1 micron sediment filter and the DI resin is lasting longer.

Don't know if it will help your situation, but maybe worth a shot.

When I added a dual di to my rodi system I increased my longevity by about 4x. I was making around 200 gallons of 0 tds water before with sediment, carbon block, ro membrane, di. Now I make over 800 gallons with sediment, carbon block, carbon block, ro membrane, di, di. I use spectrapure max cap di cartridges. They are awesome, but expensive! Here's the add on I bought, which is a good deal considering the cartridges alone are over $50 (included)...

Edit - I use .5 micron sediment filter, then (2) .6 micron carbon filters, then 90 gpd spectrapure ro membrane, then this dual di setup. Helps my ro membrane as well! My starting tds is in the 200 range

As mentioned above, you may want to consider upgrading your sediment filter cartridge. As for the DI color. the color changing DI from BRS should come a purple/blue color. I have never seen black and I've swapped mine out a few times over the systems life span.

Yea I have a tds meter. I checked it last night after it ran for a while and was back down to around 1 or 2

You'll want to replace it then. As soon as the DI resin depletes, weakly charged ions start to get released back into the water. Depending upon the type of contaminants in your tap water, the water after DI resin could potentially have more of some specific contaminants than your actual tap water.

If your DI resin is getting used quickly, you may have high CO2 content in the water. Consider degassing the water before sending it through the DI resin.
