Hello All!
My name is Courtney and I've been a member of R2R for a few months but have not found the time to create a post until now. I inherited a 90 gallon salt water aquarium about 3 years ago and learned a lot by doing research, asking questions at the local specialty store, and learning from my parents (who left me the tank). I've had my share of ups and downs and even purchased a small generator for the tank in case of power outages (got to love New England weather!) that seem to have spiked in the last few years. I've got well over 100 lbs of live rock and am looking to break down my existing tank and start something smaller and more manageable. I am wondering if there is a specific routine for taking live rock out of an existing aquarium and what the process for storage might be in the meantime? Any suggestions/pointers/advice are welcome.

Thank you!

Welcome!! You can store live rock in salt water with a heater and circulator, just do occasional water changes on it. Or if it’s going to be a while, can just let it dry then re-seed it when you are ready to go.

Welcome to R2R..

What does the re-seed process look like? Would basement storage be sufficient until I make a decision about how much rock I will need and what I can discard?
Probably the easiest way if you don’t want to keep it live would be to clean them off and soak them in muriatic acid, then thoroughly dry them. Then it would be considered “dry” rock, and you could add it to the aquarium when you are ready with bottled bacteria or another method to start cycling.

Live rock in water isn’t very hard to store or demanding on light or flow.

Figure out what tank size you are going into, decide which rocks you want to move, and put the rest for sale for someone else starting out or trade for credit at your LFS. Your extra live rock can start someones new tank perhaps.

Welcome to Reef2Reef, now that you're posting!

Welcome cw7001.
I have spare live rock in saltwater 5 gal bucket at room temp.
I'm sure some will say heat and provide circulation.
Good idea with the generator.
Let us know how we can help.
