Expanding return piping to match return holes size

Hey guys, I am currently planning out my system and have a quick question.

My return pumps have an output of 1.25" but the tank they will be going on has 1.5" return holes drilled. Are their any negatives I am overlooking if I put a 1.25 to 1.5 expander in the return line? If not, I am guessing closest to the pump I put it the better right?

I have a similar situation. My tank is drilled for 1” return bulkheads, my return pump is at 1”, and I run 1.25 pvc in between. Head pressure is calculated not just by the narrowest point, but the length that diameter runs. Larger diameter pipes have a much greater impact in reducing head pressure than other things like sharp elbows vs sweeping elbows. So yes, use larger diameter return pipes if you can.
