Hello, so I have a pretty ambitious plan for an a paludarium reef tank. I'll get into that in a moment, but I'm interested in possibly making the tank from scratch, glass/acrylic, and silicone.
How hard is this? is it even worth it? Would someone with no experience other than siliconing some baffles into a sump be able to put something like this together? How do I come about acquiring glass or acrylic of the various sizes or shapes I'll need, willing to cut it as well, but would need recommendations for that..
I plan to do a large tank possibly as big as 80 to 100 gallons and tall, possibly L shaped, I want to put a baffle in let's say the middle, and have a semi wet (dare I say moist) beach on the left side that slants into a beach which drops into an SPS reef. On the beach land side I plan to keep land hermit crabs, I've always loved them, but they'd never live long and replicating their natural environment is very difficult.
I plan to have a large freshwater pool/dish on the far left side or around the L bend on the land side possibly with an aerator to keep it fresh and for easy changing so the crabs have access to fresh drinking water. If your not familiar with land hermit crabs they also need a deep sand substrate to molt as they'll burrow and bury themselves till its complete. They require both fresh and saltwater which would make this a very interesting paludarium probably one of a kind since my looking around for similar projects failed to yield results.
For filtration I would probably drill a hole for an overflow and inflow on the reef side and have a sump under the whole setup.
This tank would probably be a dream come true, I picture my giant white spotted hermit crab meeting the land crabs on the beach in the middle lol, would be an awesome sight.
Any ideas about glass work, or experiences making your own tanks and how you acquired the glass, what type of glass acrylic I should use ect. To point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

I drew little mockup here as well showing possibly what I'm thinking. I'll probably hold the sand, which I colored in red, on the slanted beach up by using those flat reef rock bricks like steps or just a mound of life rock covered in sand. I have the water line marked below the baffle so it isn't just soaking the sand and I can control the moisture of the sand for optimal molting conditions. I currently run a brackish paludarium with fiddler's and red claws, and that tank gets very humid and warm like when I take the lid off I just get blasted, so I think it would be great for maintaining a hermit crab habitat. I'm also thinking a pair of primes or 26hds to light the whole setup. Id probably definitely keep acropora.

Well I cant help much as I have very little experience with glass and acrylic
Cutting and assembly,

I would suguest first building a mockup out of cardboard or even cheap 1/4 wood or pegboard would be a huge asset for you.

This will do a couple of things. Give you some build experience and also give you the exact dimentions of the plates of glass or acrylic to be cut.

When I aproach a task like this the first round I think yea I can do it all.
I have built many things from dozzens of varied materials.
But my experience tells me should I do this part?
Setting egotism aside I use reason.

So I say let the pros do that part for you.

With the various stresses this will be under each piece will have to be perfectly square and each edge will have to be flat and square to have even tension on the silicone.

Yes you can build a 10g 1/4 thick glass rectangle with some cheap plate glass and it will hold forever if the plates are off and the silicone gaps are uneven no problem. I have built a few of them back in the day.

But something of this magnitude that you have here, well I would not take that chance.

80 gallons of salt water spilling onto your floor will not be worth it. Consult a professional maybe try starting with a 20 gallon and keep in in your garage for a month.

My room is in the basement so it wouldn't be a catastrophe so much as a pain. Do you have any experience with getting custom aqauriums made? Is it pricy? I've since updated my mockups measurements and the tank would equate to about 50-55 gallons of water but the whole tank itself would be about 183 gallons altogether 60×18×30, with the L section coming off, being 18×18×30.
