Experiences with a DIY algae turf scrubber?

I see lots of videos about making DIY algae scrubbers but it's hard to find reviews of those who have actually used these designs. I am considering making the King of DIY scrubber:


I would love it if someone could shed some light (pun intended) on their experience with DIY algae turf scrubbers, especially if they can attest to the performance comparison to commercially available scrubbers.

I've been using various ATS designs since the mid 1990s, but always designed and built myself, never bought so I can offer no perspective on commercial models. The current waterfall scrubber I use now works really well, though I'd not be so effusive about some of my earlier efforts. There's really not much to them.
