Have you extended the length of a temperature probe that’s connected to an Apex?

I read a thread in the Neptune Systems forums, but it didn’t result in a feeling of clarity, so I wanted to ask whether the products listed below are what I need to extend my temperature probe:

RJ11 Coupler
RJ9 Cable

I have never had to do this myself but would think that as long as you are not installing a super long run that it would be fine. I could an issue when you get into the 100's of feet but would think if the run is just a little longer that it would be fine. Seems very inexpensive to try it out and see what you get.

To get all of my cords to neatly fit into wire management tracks along the baseboards, I need to extend the temperature probe by ~5ft. since it’s the only one that is too short.

I agree, as long as the listed parts are the correct parts for the application. That’s what I’m unsure of.

I'm running into a similar problem. Please let us know if this works for you.

That was my thread on the Neptune forum. As I said on PM, I never ended up extending the heater probe cable because it ended up bring easier to just move the PM1 module. I do recall that plug/socket for the temp probe is RJ9 not RJ11. Apparently RJ9 will plug into RJ11, but I’d did not try it.

Both silk line and the coupler need to be a straight through and not a cross over like a standard telephone silk line. Yes I have done it before and had to special order. If you also need a longer BNC cable for a pH probe then any BNC extender works.

There is a word called attenuation. The longer the run, the more voltage drops off because of more resistance. Doing this will indeed make your results inaccurate. You can try and use a BNC extenstion if you have an accurate probe to calibrate the new voltage to. Temp there are tools for this but not really for PH. I wouldn't trust an extension for PH.

With a 6’ extension my calibration was only .01-.02 off. Nothing nearly enough to be worried about, consistency is what you want once you know the +/-
AS the probe ages it get s less reliable. Factor this. Not saying you cant, but it makes a difference. I deal with Micro voltage everyday and I can say it messes with you over time. Just an opinion.

If anyone is interested in the results, here they are:

TEMP is the temperature probe that is in my sump, and AMBTMP is the temperature probe that I extended with the products linked to above, and it's in the display tank at the moment. AMBTMP is connected to a PM1 module that will be responsible for monitoring ambient room temperature, but I connected the extended temperature probe to it just for testing. I will be moving the extension cable from AMBTMP to TEMP after observing the values throughout the day to ensure consistency and accuracy.

Both products linked to above came with two items in each package; two extension cables and two couplers. I have no doubts that I could use all of them to extend the probe, if necessary, but that's not the case at this time.

I have verified the temperature measurement of my Apex with my Hanna Instruments Checktemp® Digital Thermometer (HI98501) multiple times over the recent week, and the temperature probe continues to work as expected after being extended with the products listed in post #1.
Used the same parts when i was trying out a reefpi. The sensor is the same the apex just uses better interference shielding. Also used an rj45 on the apex optical level sensor rj45 are easier to find all the connections for them.

I’ll look at RJ45s for extending my leak detection sensors. Thanks for the information!
