I have been running just a protein skimmer since april 2018. I know you can't have to much filtration I was looking at fluval 406 or the 306. just looking for opinions on which one I should get. sun sun is out. they look cheap and sounds like they leak a lot.

Skimmer in a sump or HOB?

If you have a sump why add the extra maintenance or a skimmer?

If no sump my preference is eheim canisters. Never had an issues with eheim canister.
