Seen a lot lately on these controllers, are these necessary, do you guys use these if so what brands, and what exactly do they do, thanks

Yes. I have two and its a great device to assure if your thermostat gets stuck, it doesn't cook your tank at 95 degrees. It shuts heater off at the temperature you tell it to.
 
I agree totally with @vetteguy53081. I went for a long time without an external controller and always worried about a heater malfunction. It's really a matter of when, not if. I'm now using the BRS controller with the titanium heaters, and don't worry nearly as much. It's worth the $ for the piece of mind alone.

Most of the folks will say get a Ranco and for a good reason. They are bulletproof. With that said, i dont think there is anything wrong with Inkbird either. Look for Models that have plastic aquarium probes, instead of metal ones. Something like ITC-306A or C929A. Both have WiFi capabilities as well.
