I am replumbing my 270 gallon main display to a basement fish room. I have large MRC skimmer with an 1 1/2 intake to match my 1 1/2 main overflow line from the MD. I have been sending ALL my water from the overflow to the protein skimmer then to the sump and back to the MD. What are some pros and cons in doing it this way? I do have a 1" "backup" overflow that does bypass the skimmer goes directly to the sump. I use a DYI 180 gallon sump with a very large refugium if that is at all relevant. Thank you in advance.

I have my skimmer in sump in the first section of my sump that has the drains going into it. If that makes sense. In your case I would suspect that the drain would have some air in it as it falls to the skimmer, unless your running a beananimal or heribe drain. I’m not sure if it would hurt the skimmers performance with the extra air.
