External protein skimmer

Do you mean like a hob style? If so I have one and it does ok. I have been told by multiple places that it all depends on the brand and the bio load in your tank.

What kind do you have? I have another 55g tank with a heavy bio load that's not drilled.

I run a skmiz sm252 on a 260+ gallon system with large tangs and like it. can be external or internal. great skimmer for the price! I ran a AE Tech down draft for 5+ years before and had great success . decided to go more energy efficient on my last build and ditched the down draft (need a monster pump to run them effectively)

I run a Deltec 702 external skimmer on my 1100g system. Works great. Gravity fed. I run my RO waste water through the skimmer collection cup and then out to a sewer drain, and I do very little maintenance.

Last week I took it apart and ran it in Vinegar for 24 hours. First maintenance I have done to the skimmer in over 4 years (other that clean the skim neck).

I ran both an MRC2 and an MRC3. Both were the best skimmers I had.....pulled a lot of dark skimmate. My only complaint is that they are loud. Not an issue if you have a basement sump.
