Bought a used sump/return pump as part of a larger package from my lfs for my new reef tank. (Marineland 90 gallon system with a proclear freedom 200 reef sump)

It uses a Little Giant external return pump that's rated at about 500ish gallons per hour. I hate it.... Sooooo much.

I was told getting a sump would quiet my system considerably, but instead it sounds like I've got a small generator in my living room. In addition it runs uncomfortably hot, where it's warm to the touch and makes the cabinet smell hot. (I've tried all the soundproofing, vibration reducing, troubleshooting tips I could find in here, and they've only dulled the sound a little).

I paid very little for the sump, so I'm not terribly upset, but I need a quiet pump. It would be easy to have a direct external replacement, but if I have to plug the hole on the sump and go internal I'll do that too.

I am fine with the flow rate, and need something on the more affordable scale, just something that won't drive me absolutely insane. What pump have you actually used that was dead quiet?

With out knowing too much about your setup. I would recommend switching it out for DC pump. They're silent just find one that can run externally and it should be a straight forward swap.

I agree with DC pump recommendation. AC pumps are reliable and can cost quite a bit less, though. If you are not looking for huge flow, Eheim 1262 is dead silent at ~900 gph. I have 2 Fluval sp series pumps that are not dead silent, but very quiet and reliable. I use SP6 in my 150g discus and 75 g corner tanks, but these also run reactors, chiller, UV, etc.

Would rather plug hole and place pump in sump. Safer, quieter.
Ehiem 1262 at around 5 foot head would be perfect.

Any pump will be quieter in water.
Eheim is an AC pump with decades of history. Get a hobby style and you will have it for a long time. Runs quiet and cool

I always thought my eheim 1262 was very quiet. That is until I pulled my Reeflo Dart and replaced it with a Vectra L1.
That was when I learned what quiet really is.
I replaced my Eheim with a Vectra M1 and was absolutely thrilled with how quiet my system had become.

If you really want quiet, go with a DC pump. There are a couple that are reliable and truly quiet.

As far as dependable, Eheim is right up at the top of my list.
Tunze, Fluval are other AC pumps with good history.

As long as you already have holes in the sump, you might as well stay with a external pump.

Ok, talk to me about this Eheim and what "silent" really means.

Is it silent run internally and externally? And what does that mean? I'm finding I'm more sound sensitive than most.
Place the pump on top of a flat surface with an anti vibration pad underneath. Use a flexible hose for the return to also dampen vibration and noise . Any pump that is running can be noisy if it isn’t well mounted.

HTH

Dc pumps can be quieter. If external def on a vibration pad and soft hose connection
