To the folks that use external return pumps , do you have some kind of containmet system if they decide to start leaking ? Or have to change out ? Have always used submersible pumps , like the idea of them being outside of sump but don't want water all over the place when they decide to leak.

Isolate the pump with a pair of good quality true Union ball valves so that the pump can easily be removed for cleaning. That's it.

Yea I get that part , pumps leak, valves leak , pipe breaks, pump leaks , you just let water hit the floor ?

I've run good quality external pumps for 30 years ...... next pump leak will be my first pump leak. Can one leak ..... Of course, but if you install it properly the risk is pretty low.

The only time I have water on the floor is when breaking the unions to clean the pump. The water inside the pump will spill out. May want to plan ahead for that. Usually just towels on hand for me.
