external skimmer

You still need to adjust water height . You will supply water with a separate pump from your sump then return from skimmer back into your sump .

This is the better of the skimmer choice. IMO.

Yes there are some adjustments to make BUT there are adjustments to the internal skimmers as well. Internal skimmers are subjet to overflow or lack of efficiency dependant on sump water levels that are constantly changing. This is not the case with recirculating skimmers. Some may argue this but in the end its true.

The BRS video series goes into pretty good detail, if you care to watch it.

Ther are more advantages to external skimming beyond saving sump space, to many to list for me at this moment on my phone.
But in the end they are superior skimmers.

Imo external skimmers are for large systems.
Look at a tunze dc skimmer. Very underated and need no adjustment. You dont even need to turn it off to clean the cup.
Has anti overflow and just plain skims.

I have to clarify. There are in-sump RECIRCULATING skimmers.
So to clarify recirculating skimmers are superior whether external or internal. Is what I should have said and ment to say.
