Extra Filtration

so thought there was a wast of space in the overflow on my tank so i used it as a filter by fitting a sleeve over the standpipe that is 5mm higher with hols drilled at the bottom then filled the space outside the sleeve with matrix. the water flows over the wire through the matrix up inside the sleeve and down the standpipe. Put 2 ltrs of matrix in and its only half full with good flow.once a week i pull out the standpipe and the water rushes into the sump flushing the matrix out. What do you think

Most wont use filter media in the overflow because if it gets clogged and backed up you will end up with water on the floor...keep it clean....

it cant backup as it will overflow the sleeve and go down the standpipe. That is why i added the sleeve also with a power outage it will not drain

Have you used Matrix in the past ? i know this is similar to siporax , be careful how much you use as this can strip your tank too clean

well 3 weeks and nitrate is 0 just pull out the standpipe once a week to flush the matrix looking good so far
