Good morning fellow reefers,

Two nights ago my old Puratek RO/DI unit began to smoke and parts of it gave up making water; it produced water at a 1:0 product water to wastewater ratio. Incredulous, I figured it was probably due.

I got another RO/DI unit from another reefer, and they threw in two extra cartridges for media filters. Long story short, my question is, how can I maximize the 4 stage RO/DI unit I have already (sediment, carbon, DI resin, RO membrane) with the additional two cartridges I have? Should I even bother? I remember AZDesertRat mentioning how additional stages aren't necessarily better. It's a 200 GPD pump, and I have no discernible pressure problems if that factors into anything.

What are the micron sizes of your current filters? I'm assuming by cartridges you mean two extra filter housings?

Yep, two housings. The sediment filter is 1 micron and the carbon block is 5.

I would add a 5 micron to the front for increase sediment capture, before a 1 micron to start the traditional 4 stages. Then do BRS pro at the end with additional anion resin. Or if your water is already fairly sediment/rust free I would go full pro on the back side. With cation, anion, mixed bed resins. It has saved me a bit of cash getting more time out of my resin. If you haven’t watched the BRS series on resin effectiveness. I would give it a go.

Thanks for the advice! I just checked my carbon and turns out I got a half micron block

I use 2ea 1Micron sediment filters before my carbon. Then 3 resin after the RO.
