Hello there,
I'm trying to extract and culture zooxanthellae. i know its possible.
I have large amounts of Pulsing Xenia, which has a good concertation of zooxanthellae.
Anyone tried it before? I've got some lab equipment for the process.
Does anyone know a regular microalgae (phytoplankton) grow medium can be used to grow them?

Cheers

This article talks about how to separate zooxanthelle with stony coral. Might work for Xenia?

where's the fun in that?
also i don't want a mixed of clades, i want to have different kinds

its for high school experiments, wanna do it with the kids

im familiar with this article ,not think its gonna work since its not a stony
still gonna try it on monday

yeah, getting zooxanthellae out of any soft coral is super easy.
Cut off a tiny section and gently squeeze. you'll get drops of brown liquid come out. Each drop is uncountable zillions of the symbiodinium cells.
Never tried to culture them, but they are super-thoroughly studied, so I'm sure you can find the growth medium that they use.
I have done spectral stuff on them to look at pigment profiles.

i think ill try to blend some Xenia with a homogenizer, then centrifuge it to get a clean sample of zooxanthellae.
if it will work I will upload some pics here of the process.

Why add a bunch of tissue to be separated than just squeeze out liquid and centrifuge that?
(it'll probably work regardless)
