I've read over the threads about Popeye and have already dosed my tank with Epsom salt today. It started off slightly popped out but now looks like this is why I finally decided to dpae the Epsom salt. I figured it would heal on its own since it wasn't cloudy and now I think she may lose her eye due to my ignorance. Do you think she will lose the eye or should the swelling go down?

There’s a good chance that your fish will lose the eye, unfortunately. Epsom salt didn’t cause that issue, if anything it would have helped.

@Humblefish @melypr1985 @Maritimer what say you?

Treat with antibiotics?

Wow! That is extreme. I've had a clown that has had this happen a couple times, just not quite that extreme. Both times, the eye went back to normal on its own while the fish kept eating and acting normal. In that extreme of a case I'm not sure if there is anything you can do, but there's some really good "fish drs" on here that will weigh in!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've tried catching her but she is quick and I've seen her run the eye into the rock as she darts back into it. Im afraid im causing her more stress and harm than leaving her in the dt. I'll keep you posted though. I dosed the Epsom salt today so hopefully in a couple days I'll see some improvement. Thanks everyone!

Yea I meant I dosed the Epsom salt after I noticed it getting worse. I thought it would get better on its own when it was barely popped out and wasn't cloudy at all.

I’m saying Epsom salt was a good decision, it wouldn’t have caused it to worsen.

I know this was a while back. Did you dose epsom salt in a reef tank or was this fish only?

You can dose plain USP epsom salts into a reef tank. It will elevate the magnesium levels slightly.

thanks for your reply. I’m guessing it can’t hurt just hope I dose the correct amounts and buy the correct epsom salt

1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of tank water. Can re dose a day later if needed. Best to mix the epsom salts in a container with some tank water. Stir until dissolved. The add to the tank.

When you say you can re dose a day later, do you mean to put a tbsp every other day untill my fish is better? I know it’s super late into this post but I’m going through the same thing as the OP and I just dosed 1tbsp of USP epson for my 5gal QT tank in 48hrs should I dose another tbsp?
