My first coral was a small green Montipora capricornis. I had read they were relatively "easy", and would kind of be a "canary-in-the-coal-mine", serving as an early indicator of problems, and thereby safeguard other SPS. I added the coral to my tank exactly 60 days ago. It's almost doubled in size since then, but is fading; at least half the color and vibrancy it originally had. I'm confused by the growth in comparison to color. It's been in the same position, with the same light, and pretty stable parameters. If anything, there's a lack of nitrates and phosphates now compared to two months ago, and, I have increased the amount of blue in my lighting schedule. What can I do? I have more corals forthcoming, and am worried about their welfare. Can one target feed a monti cap? Should I be using a supplement?

I put a monit cap in my tank about two months ago and it's almost doubled in size and I also have a decent amount of phosphates showing up...it's looking as good as the day I put it in. Maybe try to let phosphate creep back up a little to see if that reverses the color.

I'm not sure I'd know how to do that, exactly - maybe harvest a lot of macro out of my fuge, or disconnect my GFO reactor. Gotta be another way, just seems counter intuitive. Doesn't it?

Check your potassium level. Low potassium will cause colors to fad .

Jeff, what were your phos numbers when you first added the monti and what are the numbers now? A fast drop in phos and nitrate can cause the symptoms you are describing.

Duly noted. I've just been doing the basic testing, and will look at a potassium supplement and testing. Thanks Mike.

I think that's it Rob. No doubt I've seen a sudden drop in PO4, with the addition of a GFO reactor, which I failed to mention as a variable in the equation. In fact, I was just reading in another thread, that fading like what I may be experiencing is in fact common when first implementing GFO. The article said adding amino's may help. I suspect most folks implement GFO when they have PO4 issues, whereas I added it right off the bat, no real issues. Maybe a newbie mistake, not sure. Rather than starting to dose something however, maybe I should consider taking the reactor off line for a while, until my bio load is up, or just running my skimmer intermittently. Like I said, I have some frags on the way, and want things optimal. At the same time, I do not want to be making changes. Prolly overthinking it...

Does that mean they bounce back?

They can.
