I’m setting up a 40b softie reef and I really wanted a centerpiece. I’m 14 and just getting into the hobby so not much experience. I really wanted a clam but since I’m setting up my tank as I speak, it’s not even close to mature enough. Is there another alternative to a clam that could be a centerpiece for my soft coral reef tank?

It seems like you're asking 2 questions. You could do a clam with a softie tank, sure, and it would make a good centerpiece. But at this point there is no good substitute or stand-in that you could get right now with a brand new tank.

I agree but if they want a fake clam here is one.

You could look into a tyree toadstool leather. Beautiful neon green polyps, can get a decent size and aren’t too expensive. Could also get maybe a more colorful zoa for the time being

Hey Im 13 so 1 year younger are you looking for a fake clam with color or like a shell structure? also cute dog
Oops, I see how the title sounds now. I should have said “Clam Substitute.” Also ty, she (my dog) is my pride and joy!

I don’t mind having to wait 12+ months

then unless you were open to getting a coral centerpiece for the time being maybe just wait for your tank to mature to get a clam

40b with a beginner clam is going to be tough. You really need a bigger tank & experience in dosing. I think youd be better off with say a green toadstool as a centerpiece or maybe a beginner anemone if you can get decently powerful lighting

Toadstool doesn't sound bad, how about an elegance coral?

Elegance’s can be hit or miss depending on where you get them. I also think elegance’s need a more established aquarium. Didn’t get my elegance until my tank was up for around 6 months. Little tip though. Fish do like to use tyree toadstools as resting spots too haha

Your rabbitfish is so cute! An elegance is a better choice for a more established reef I should have said that in my post

Where could I get my hands on one of those beauties? Also how expensive are they? Would love to get my clowns to host one. Also very cute rabbit fish!

Tyrees are probably 20-60 dollars depending on the frag size reefloungeusa sells 1-1.5 inch frags for 45 dollars. Your LFS could get one in if you request it

I’d prefer them to host a leather like that not that I’d have any control because they might host a wave maker for all I know.
Clowns can host mushrooms are are hardy. I'll look for a pic

When you say Tyree, is that a specific strain of a toadstool? I really like the weeping willow, or just a basic green polyp toadstool. What’s the difference between a tyree and a normal green polyp toadstool?

Im not sure if it is a specific strain or not Im guessing it is but the difference is personal IMO depending on which one appeals to you better. In some peoples opinion Tyrees are greener and more beautiful
