Fake coral

I was thinking of getting some fake coral until I can start getting the real stuff. I think if I can get something my clowns would be comfortable in they would be happier. I know they might not care but I figure it's worth a shot. Any suggestions on where I can get something my clowns would like?

I can't help you with fake corals, but just experience. They can be just fine with live rock and enough places around the rocks to feel comfortable till you add corals when ready.

Many new hobbyist feel the need to add anemones to help their clowns right away when their tanks can't support them yet. So, with that said, your idea of giving them something fake is a much better choice, but really not needed.

If you still would like to add something in the meantime, let's see what others have used to help you.

you Can do corals. Just start with easy suspects. May not be a nem for your clowns but it’s progress. I have heard of strange corals hosting clowns so ya never know. Not all coral is “difficult” to care for.

Here's a pic of my "fake" coral. I just put it in. It's cast coral. So it's not fake; it's real coral, just not yanked off a coral reef. It's called Signature Coral. I also have some live rock in there - also manufactured, but also the same material as actual reef rock.

I bought some at www.artificialcoralinserts.com and was satisfied with what I got.

For some reason, I have never had a pair of clowns that find a home amongst rockwork or corals in my tank. They always end up in one of the back wall corners.

If your not ready, then your not ready.

Toadstool leathers are pretty tough and though it extremely rare, clowns can host them.

invasive coral in my opinion is how you up keep your tank. I’m not sure if your tank is stable enough either, but there are easy corals to care for. Toadstools are hardy, Finger leathers as well. Zoathids have always held up for me. Not that any of these will generally host a clown but it’s a start in coral. Rather than going fake. Or you can go fake that’s fine too. Just thought I would try and boost some confidence

I'm a big believer that dead SPS pieces like big branching Acros are under rated..... nicely cultured dead skeletons can pull.off quite a dramatic aquascaping look.

Start at LFS coral.places and ask for dead coral skeletons ...

also ask them where the dead skeletons of past highschool aged workers who played on their phone instead of W O R K I N G are kept. Lololololololololol

Here's something to consider. Those fake coral pieces get algae just like your glass & are a pain to clean. You also need a bigger sump, because all your bio is going to be in there. I think they look good though like on tanked, but lord are they expensive.

Your clowns will be fine in a fowlr setup.

Clownfish will host in those little rubber balls from the 2000s that are like giant rubber band balls with the projections sticking out (have no idea what those were called my kid was nine last time I saw one)

I could never ever add fake corals to my systems but it is your tank after all.

Do you have a build thread? Put up a recent FTS picture (full tank shot) and we can offer some better advice.

Clowns ime will host about anything. Preference for soft things that move. Had a clown pair host a cyanobacteria mat on my sand bed that was starting to go, so moved in my water flow. So possible they coukd host a large fake anemone, mind you ive never seen a fake one look like a real one.

I would do some caribsea fake rock. It has bacteria on it and comes in some nice shapes. I used a 50/50 blend of it and live rock in my tank. The purple does fade but it will cover in coralline soon enough. Imo its way better than dry white rock.
My clown hosts a 12 head frogspawn since day one and only leaves it to feed. Pics?

I dont like fake stuff but that actually looks pretty cool!

My clowns have hung tight to my nepthia coral and big red mushrooms...they would lay eggs on the mushroom rock. They tend to hover around my hammers now....but that could be where I drop the food in.
