Fallen Friends- Crispy Fish

I can picture a specimen shadow box with scientific names on little placards, like you often see with insects.

Cool idea!

I think it's strange how these are technically pets, but most of us would never think of doing this to our dogs or cats.

Here's a crispy Rainfordia opercularis that I met. He dried himself out by jumping, but I like to say its a method used for shipping fish called dry-shipping.

I've never done this w/ fish, but years ago a neighbor of mine started asking for the molts of a purple lobster I had.
I had no idea what he was doing w/ them until one day I saw a plaque he made, w/ every molt, perfectly positioned before drying, then sprayed w/ a clear coat to preserve and make color nice.
It was actually pretty cool to see the growth and color change w/ each molt.

I just lost my first lightning maroon clownfish =,( so this is the way in going! can someone please tell me which method I should start with being it's my first time.

Did you end up preserving your fallen friend?

Just saw this! I hope it went well for you. I use a simple dehydrator at a low temp!

unfortunately I didn't pat him down thoroughly and he froze to the point he crystallized beyond recognition.

Lost this guy unexpectedly in qt. If you want durability coat the fins with modpodge. It dries clear and gives the fins some flexibility.

don't know what modpodge is but I'm looking into that now. what else do you need to do to prepare the fish?

Modpodge is sold in hobby and craft stores. You get matte finish or gloss. Paint it on in light multiple coats. To just dry them I let them lay out in a low humidity situation. They have very little meat to them so dry out quite well. You can seal the entire fish with modpodge if you want. Store in a dry area without direct sunlight to avoid fading.

Thanks for the tips!
