Well it happened, ich or velvet hit the tank and wiped out all but 3 fish. I’ve moved them to QT and started TTM. The display will now sit fallow for 80 days. This is my first and hopefully only time I will go through this, so I have a few questions regarding DT maintenance and improvements while it is fallow.

As far as maintenance, I plan to feed lightly to sustain the inverts and increase coral feeding to make up for the lack of fish. I assume weekly 10% water changes are still needed to keep up trace elements etc. Is there any reason I should adjust my normal schedule? Are weekly changes overkill with no fish?

I’d also like to redo some rock work and clean up a few difficult algae spots. Will making these changes during the fallow period have an impact on the 80 day timeline? Any new rock or material added will either be dry or freshly cycled in a pest free environment. I would think no, but wanted to get the group's opinion.

It’s going to be a long 3 months, but worth it in the end.

Go ahead and redo the rock work and clean the algae spots. It won't negatively affect the 80 day timeline. I went ahead and just rescaped the entire tank when I had to keep the tank fallow...and did a deep clean of the sand bed....and really just overhauled everything...

When you say freshly cycled, do you mean you're curing live rock you get from an LFS? Or do you mean rock that you've stuck in a container with old salt water and some bacteria? If you're adding anything in, it resets the timer.

For new rock it would be new dry rock. could I just add it to the tank dry and let it cycle in there?
