great shots, I struggle to get nice bright pictures to show color so always fall into going a little to under exposed. These look nice and natural. That's pink floyd and what? That purple with yellow highlights and green polyps is a great combo.

I actually enjoy going a little underexposed. Really highlights the corals and I always loved the look of it. I go brighter to show the color detail but it’s a fine line to potentially looking washed out sometimes.

That’s Diabolic Pacman... very similar to Pink Floyd but lots of white in between corallites. The other is the LRO/TSA Lunar Lemonade.

Great pieces. The diabolic pacman looks a lot like my pink floyd. I had a small piece of the pacman a few years back but lost it before I could see it grow out. I really like that lunar lemonade, I'll have to keep an eye out.

More from the first night of goofing around with the camera.

My observation is that these Canon shots appear to have more saturated/rich colors and more contrast compared to the Nikon pics. Not that those were bad, it’s just a difference I am seeing. They look great!

Those pictures look amazing! I definitely love the multiple posts a day. That's the new schedule right?
Hey hey, now you’ve done it. When I go back to one a day and weekdays only... I’ll get complaint letters in my inbox.

I wonder if that’s just the look of Canon cameras? I’m no camera expert but certain brands have a look to them, right? Also, maybe because it’s a much better sensor then my hobbyist grade Nikon? Or maybe the brown filter I was using before on the Nikon helped filter the blues but also squashed some of the richness of the colors?

It’s nice to be able to use no filter at all and know there shouldn’t be anything influencing my color other than my white balance settings.

You’re absolutely right. There should be as little as possible between your lens and subject. Anything else that’s between those two will affect the quality.

You may have a combination of things that are making the new pics look different (better in my opinion), but in my research, prior to buying my full frame, I did have to concede that Canon images straight off the memory card were better looking than Nikon.

As for your sensor, the sensor of the D90 is still cropped isn’t it? There really shouldn’t be much difference between that rig and your Nikon rig I wouldn’t think. However, I’m not educated on Canon equipment at all. Lol. I do know that the glass is by far the most important piece of the puzzle!

Makes sense. I know nothing of sensors... just know this one has more megapixels. Lol. It is a cropped sensor on the 90D.

I’m using the same Tamron 90mm for the canon (albeit a newer model) and the same Laowa 60mm macro I used prior with an adaptor on it to fit the Canon mount since it was Nikon mount.

Well since you’re using the same lenses, you’re almost to an apples to apples comparison between the brands. So it’s safe to say that the Canon body is producing a higher standard RAW image Straight off the card. Couple that with infinite white balance correction and that’s money!

In my opinion Nikon photos straight off the card always seem color muted to me. I’ve had 3 different models from entry to pro and they all need about 6-10 on the saturation slider in LR just to start!

I’m gonna get with a Canin buddy this weekend and try to mess around with that auto WB setting...

That’s good to know about the Nikon. While I wasn’t paying attention, I always had my adjustment slider around 5-8 on saturation since I noticed the dullness you talked about when I shot in RAW with the Nikon. That’s what usually got it close to what I saw with my own eyes.

I’m literally just snapping photos on the Canon now, transferring directly to my phone via their Canon App, and posting. I love it!

Man Ty, that is fantastic. You know, I feel burdened when I think about getting the camera out to take shots. I start going over all the things that I’ll have to mess with like the filter, the WB problems, then having to transfer everything to the PC and edit and then transfer everything back to my phone....it’s very cumbersome. It sounds like you’ve found a solution to all of that work! I’ll likely be following you!

Under exposed shouldn’t be much of a problem especially if you use an editing software where you can create masks and adjust the exposure in specific areas of the photo
