Tiny little pistol shrimp are indeed a thing. Either juveniles of larger species, or adults of tiny species.

When you catch whatever it is, if it turns out to be a pest, you can use clove oil to euthanize it humanely. You should have clove oil on hand anyway, for when tank inhabitants are sick or injured enough to need euthanasia.

The critter may not have killed your fish. Hermit crabs and other scavengers will make an intact dead fish look predated upon pretty quickly.

Nitrite harms nothing. As long as there is no ammonia, don't sweat the nitrite.

Thanks. All seems fine. I'm testing tomorrow. Current theory is that I have a pistol living in the rocks.

Current motto is: don't wory about anything unless it's white spots or an otherwise clearly sick critter.

Update: I suspect this may have been what I saw that day. This shrimp is pretty transparent, but in the dark of a cave could easily look grey.

It's definitely a pistol of some sort. It doesn't like bristleworms and clicks at them often when I'm feeding and they come out to clean up.

Yep, that's a little pistol shrimp. Cute lil fella. Probably harmless- most species are. They definitely don't like bristleworms, but you wouldn't, either, if you had spiny worms as big as you are in your neighborhood.
