I noticed that some zoas that happen to be close in proximity to each other extend more fully . Is this the same principle that plants use to outgrow their neighbors while striving for the sunlight the fastest? Would it make sense that the zoa that extended fully while next to a smaller colony would outcompete the smaller colony by colonizing more quickly? Maybe this is just an observation. You snooze you lose. Since zoas don’t seem to sting each other maybe their tactic is to smother the smaller colony. Has anyone else noticed this?

Interesting idea... i like the theory. Not sure it would be able to be proven. More anecdotal than anything. But I suppose just like plants, coral do have chemical and physical warfare. So I dont think its a stretch.
