A true pleasure to be welcomed. And without each other this hobby is nothing but guessing games. In reference to the tank with the two white ( yellow) chips. The addition of blue will offset that when done correctly. But you can clearly see that image is helpful as the red spectrum does slightly show vs an individual chip of one spectrum. Unless you diffuse all optics and spread the light everywhere. I don't think anyone is actually just running a reef with white at least i wouldn't. One thing I honestly have to say compared to the local site here, You guys seem to be a phenomenal community going great lengths to avoid confrontations and help each other which compared to local forum is a breath of fresh air. Kudos to the R2R community.

I prefer to do my research at Cancun...Amazing Diving...

You're welcome to come out to Chicago and I'll show you better Pizza (5LB Deep Dish) and and we can talk about spectrum...

I only ask because my practicable experience experimenting with Cree Warms and Neutrals has shown the Neutrals a bit yellow. Here is a pic of my tank with two different Cool White Bins. One is a notch above the coolest neutral.

I will admit and agree that if your looking for that "full spectrum", replacing a couple Cool for Warm has merit.

Personally I prefer the 15-20K look over the 6.5-12K look.
When you do the research in Cancun what equipment do you use if you don't mind me asking?

If you you don't mind me asking what equipment do you prefer to test with in Cancun.

I own (2) Fathom LED Hydra Series and they are suspended above my 90 gallon reef tank. I have had great success with them.

My apologies on the late response.

Things have been really busy with Macna and setting up for our domestically manufactured fixture.

I started with a simple Apogee PAR Meter and Milwaukee Lux Meter. The reason for the Lux meter is to duplicate/confirm the results of Fossa and Nilsen in their Modern Coral Reef Aquarium Vol 1

DaytimeLUX.jpg

The first trip was a simple confirmation and to my amazement on how quickly peak intensity diminishes near the equator. Yes one can use declination of the sun and calculate using simple math...Well not so simple in some inner city public schools...To measure the amount of light corals receive first hand was worth the trip.

On my personal tanks I incorporated more LEDs at a similar intensity curve and have had great results with growth.

The second trip was a bust as the housing for the Par Meter leaked so we only observed the growth on several dives and unable to measure PAR at 20, 30, 40 ,50 and 60 feet which was the objective...Just another reason to go back..

I personally like the Cree X series LED but depending on the source the colour can be like a box of chocolates...You dont know what your going to get.

I look at lighting a Reef tank like a fine meal..not Dennys but Chez Pauls....Yes I live in Chicagoland...I'm still working on how to parallel park a car like the Blues Brothers...

A bit too much nutmeg can ruin the taste and overcompensating with garlic is one way to approach lighting...Adding extra nutmeg and garlic is another way to achieve similar goals....Awesome looking growing reef....The Proof is in the pudding....

Welcome to the community there is a lot of opinion, feedback and open discussion not found in other forums. Your point on optics and spread should be talked about more.
