So I came home today and went to empty the skimmer cup and looked at my jbj heater controller and the temp said 76 degrees. I verified the setting on the heater and it was set at 78 degrees. So for the next 4 hours I watched it and it dropped oanother half degree. It just so happens I have a back up for heating my water when I make salt. Wow that was a close one. Everything in the tank seems to be ok. I'm not sure if this would have an impact on my corals. Mainly a sps dominant tank and polyp extension is normal. Well a few lessons learned. How many of you have two heaters in your sump? That's the route I think I am going to go. Also what type of heater is a good one to get. I have had my jbj for 4 years and after this incident not willing to take the chance. I just looked at my thermometer and we are back to normal. Wish me luck and I hope everything turns out for the best

I once came home to a heater that malfuntioned the other way. My water was in the 90's. I havent ran a heater since, its kinda warm here in AZ though.

Never trust a heater. Once they start acting weird after a year or two I replace them and they retire to heating salt water.

For anyone who has an old-ish heater without a controller, I recomend getting a controller or getting a Finnex or JBJ temp controller as a fail-safe.

I loved my AquaVia Titanium. Currently have a Eheim Jager and Finnex. The Finnex and AV come with a temp probe. Happy hunting!
