So has anyone had any experience with these in a reef environmen? I think they would be cool if you could get coral to grow on them. Any thought?

I had a similar one in a tank about 10 years ago.. no real negative I can remember other than not being able to put a power head on the rear glass.
... And the inability to easily pull it out if it gets overrun with algae or pests.

Algae and coral grew fine.

never used one in saltwater, but used one from Universal Rocks in my freshwater setup. I did not have any issues, but I have heard if you do not wash them thoroughly (sometimes even if you do) they can release some gunk into the water. I washed mine well and had no issues. Sorry not reef experience but something to consider.

Also be sure to seal the edges well, you don't want stuff getting behind it, is nearly impossible to clean if that happens.
