Favia Base

So we have a favia in my son's tank that is about to outgrow it's frag disk. I was thinking if we mounted the frag to a mesh structure, it would encrust into a nice ball shape over time as it grows. I found this mesh sphere on thingiverse. Has anyone ever tried to grow out an encrusting coral on something like this?

It will run onto surrounding rock or structures
