Hey so I have this one favia and usually it looks huge and really cool but a couple of days ago I noticed some deterioration and I thought it was probably because I had changed my lighting schedule so I decided to just keep the schedule how it was before. And after a day of two the favia looked better but now I've just noticed a huge chunk has been taken out! Does anyone know what this might be? Thanks In advance.

The coral doesn't look particularly bad to me. The polyps are open so it looks like it's feeding... not something a coral in distress will usually do.

a missing polyp could be due to a fish or crab munching.... I'd give it a day or two. Feed the corals, dose some amino's if you have them - it will help it heal. If things take a turn for the worse, i might bring it to a friend's established Aquarium and let it recover.

Ok thank you, I'm just kinda scared to feed it because it's a new tank and when I fed it a couple weeks ago it caused a bad nutrient spike in the tank.

I understand, and this is a good observation. A tiny amount of Reef Chili or some blended Mysis can be fed with a syringe (turn your pumps off for several minutes beforehand). This will minimize the nutrient addition to the tank. If their polyps are not out, a couple drops of aminos should evoke a feeding response. Spot "feeding " aminos is also another good idea.

Blended mysis? How do you blend it? And thanks I'll see if my lfs has some aminos.

For this I've just thrown a cube in a blender with a small amount of salt water, and blended on low for ten sec or so. Any nutritious fish food will work. Also, if you need the aminos in a pinch, you can get a small bottle on amazon. I like Brightwell Coral Amino. I also imagine most any brand will do....
