I got this temperamental favia a few weeks ago, and attempted to mount it on a piece of low rock. Apparently in this case super glue is not super, because it stopped holding within a few days. I tried to keep it balanced in the spot I wanted, but one way or another, it kept getting knocked around. It was not happy, and even while the glue was holding, it never seemed to come out all the way and almost always had sweepers out. At one point, I just decided to sit it on the substrate while cleaning the tank, and forgot to put it back on its rock. Within hours that thing was much puffier than I'd ever seen, and it just seemed happier somehow.

Any downsides to leaving it on the substrate, if that's clearly where it wants to be?

Favia are often happier on the substrate and there they will usually grown in a round brain shape if left there. Its not a bad idea to give it a flat base thats under the sand so it stays stable as it grows.

I snipped the post off of the plug it came with, so it's a flat, stable base. Is there anything I need to worry about if it's there? The substrate itself is fairly large and coarse, so it doesn't get kicked up much
