Thanks Gary. Having a hard time with this one. It was shot under deep Blue Reef Brights...crazy blue. The light area is more of a silver color.
Here is an untouched image. just converted to jpeg from NEF. Can you white balance it with an explanation on how you achieved it. I think it will be helpful to a lot of people.
I had a similar coral that came to me as Platygyra yaeyamaensis. I can't be certain of the species, but definitely a Platygyra as others have said. I haven't seen one with light colored eyes before, and it's been a couple years since I saw one this nice. Awesome coral!
Mitchell,
Would need the NEF file. Can't effectively adjust the white balance on a jpg. I'm a Canon shooter so not sure if I have the software to convert a Nikon RAW file. Should be relatively easy to do with your RAW-conversion software. Just look for a mid-toned area in the shadowed "white" areas and click on it with the white balance tool/eye dropper. Try several spots to find one that gets you close to the correct white balance, then use the sliders to fine tune.
Gary
Just remembered, there's also a possibility that it's an Oulophyllia. They often have great coloration like that, and a very similar outward appearance to Platygyra. There's also Goniastrea australensis that can look very similar. In short, I'm very torn now. Could be any of those.
