What brand refractometer are you using? Favorite one you've had so far? I've got RedSea and Vee Gee. So far so good. Still trying to understand how refractometers work and how to properly use.

Hanna salinity checker not a refracto but honestly since I started using it never going back to refracto. And don't let Jake Adam's hear you are using SG instead of PPT lol

Vee gee stx3
All refractometers are temperature compensated, at instrument temp.
So if water sample is larger, Milwaukee, hanna, you must wait a couple of minutes for the water temp,to reach room temp.
Vee gee, and others requiring a drop are immediately the same temp.
Vee gee also calibrated with rodi.

I use that one, it's freaking awesome. I haven't changed batteries in like a year! I calibrate it every once and awhile but it never needs it. Good stuffs.

Thanks for the high praise on that Milwaukee refractometer - I'll have that model next week or sooner ... excited I'll be able to read it!! My current refractometer that is no longer made is wonderful, but my eyesight is very poor so I always have to have someone else in family verify for me... this is going to be awesome!

My current refractometer that is no longer made is wonderful, but my eyesight is very poor so I always have to have someone else in family verify for me... this is going to be awesome!

Just remember it has a claimed accuracy of +/- 2 ppt, so a reading of 35 ppt could be anything from 33 to 37 ppt (sg = 1.0249 to 1.0279).

Been using redsea for about 5yrs, seems it's accurate.

I use the Milwaukee MA887 and love it. I will occasionally verify my reading against a test solution or against on old optical refractometer that i have but its always been accurate enough for my needs. I calibrate it occasionally but I dont think it needs it when i do.

that's one of the main reasons I got the Milwaukee, ease of use and being able to clearly read it. You may notice from my profile pic that I am in need of my "coke bottles".

I have found the VeeGee STX-3 the best comprimise of cost and quality. My Milwakee digital meter broke after a year and the red sea is not nearly as accurate as this one. I recommend this one highly if you plan to use it long term.
