I am considering a second tank in the next year or so so i am officially in the planning phase!

Right now i have a Red sea Reefer 250, which is 36x20x21. Love the tank but i think i want a different footprint for the next one i do, maybe shallower or something. For sure i want more depth for aquascaping and such.

Here are my thoughts, Personally i think i would like something that is 48x30x18, Still shallow, good depth and length. I think it would make a cool tank size! However i dont think anyone makes a tank like this and i cant affoard to go custom as im sure this will turn out something like $2k for just the tank. Which is well outside my budget if i want decent equipment lol

Next idea was the 120g Fatboy tank, 4x2x2, Good depth, good length but taller than i think i want. I havent seen one in person but idk.

The other side of things if i went shallow a good tank is the deep blue rimless 80rr tank, 48x24x16, Which is pretty close to what i would be looking for i guess, however i dont like the corner overflow. I would prefer the back panel i think as i dont have a place for a peninsula tank

Or ive seen some awesome tanks that are 24x24x12 as well.

So what are the pros and cons of a shallow tank?

For reference i plan on using the 8bulb ati fixture over all of these tanks. I would consider an xr30 pro over the smaller one but i think i prefer t5 over led..

I guess in a roundabout way what is everyones favorite tank dimensions?!

Planning a tank for next year as well (if I can get it past the boss lol). I've falling in love with the 6ft tanks. Due to space limitations I'm looking at 72x18x22 120gal...

I find it best to focus on keeping your surface area divisible by 24"x24" boxes which is a standard light fixture coverage. I have a 120 (4x2x2) and love it. I would love a tank that was 4x4x2, or 6x4x2 but that will be down the line. I also think 2 feet tall is the perfect amount of height. It the goldilocks of height. Not so shallow that you're coral grow out of the tank in a week, and not too deep that you are limited to only the strongest penetrating lights.

Thanks for the input everyone, maybe I'll just stick with the tried and true fatboy 120 and call it good. Definitely cheaper than going fit something custom

The 24x18 width and depth is one of the nicest dimensions! With length being under 5ft though! Mine is 44x24x18 and I love it!

Marineland has some "deep dimension" tanks that I've been eyeing. Their 250 is 60x37x27... I feel like 27" tall may be a bit much, but you can't beat over three feet deep! SO much room for scaping... and activities.
