I have started to slowly stock my 40gallon community reef tank and I had wanted a small angel but because my tank is a little too small I've decided to get wrasse instead.
I love the look of the six line but I think I'd go for a melanaurus instead as they are more peaceful.
I've seen they should be kept with other wrasse though and it got me wondering what are peoples favourites?

I love my leopard wrasse. I had a sixline In my tank with no issues. My dad has one in his 150 going on 7 years with no issues. I hear a lot of good things about yellow coris. I’ll probably pick one up this weekend. Fairy ,flasher, and carpenters wrasses are also good choices

I’ve got a melansrus and an African exquisite fairy. The fairy has more personality and doesn’t spend as much time hiding as the Mel does. He’s my favorite reef safe wrasse. My favorite wrasse in general is the red coris.

They dont need to be kept with other wrasses? But possum and pinkstreaks would be good for that tank size
"a 2-3 inch sandy bottom to hide under if frightened, and other peaceful wrasses, including its own species, is an acceptable environment"
This is what i read and I'd read it as saying they SHOULD be with other peaceful wrasses but now I've re-read it I see it probably is just saying they CAN be kept with other peaceful wrasses ;Facepalm

For a 40 gal smaller halichoeres can work for some time, but not permanently. I’d recommend a flasher wrasse :)

Lol i can see the confusion

While you’re here, do you know if a leopard and yellow corris would be fine together in a 45?
It depends on the fish, I’d say more space would be more optimal but it could be done from a temperament perspective — typically.

The leopard is pretty shy and timid. It is a larger fish though ( 3”+) and the corris are smaller (about 2”) I heard that the corris will swim all over the tank and the leopard kind of stays in the same area.

Leopard if you have sand and or Fairy or flasher for bare bottom
I like the look of a leopard wrasse but liveaquaria says they need 90g. The guy at the LFS said instead of Angel's I should get some wrasse but it seems they mostly need just as much space anyway

Last hoevens I had reached almost 6 inches. I now prefer the dusky, but that gets even larger. I wouldn’t personally put either in a 40, but that’s a judgement you’ll have to make. So many cool wrasses from multiple genus to pick from. I particularly like the orange back fairy, but my favorites are the various leopards. Not easy to acclimate, but quite enduring if you can get the m past the first six months.
