Feasibility of a no-tech pico?

No fish, heater or aeration, just a sand bed, live rock, macro algae, a couple of mangrove propagules and two or three tiny shrimp. Locally collected macro and shrimp, so accustomed to local temperatures, and putting the tank/vase/jar inside, where temperatures fluctuations are lessened. WC's as required too.

Thought that might be the case. I've seen it done in freshwater but only with dense plants growth, hence why I ask about macro, but obviously they're two very different things.

Feasible, yes... beginner, absolutely not.. It would give you more headaches than what it's worth. (Only judging you being a beginner from low number of post and joining recently so if I'm wrong about that sorry).

I guess I'm a beginner, my first reef tank was a pico set up in October 2017, but I've been doing my homework on reef keeping for a little longer, and ever since. Track record has been kinda shoddy anyways...

There are tanks like this. I'll have to find some links.

I searched on R2R a bit but not able to locate.

If you do a Google search of "jar reef tank" and "vase reef tank" you will see many examples. most do have a heater for temp swings, airline for some water movement and oxygen HOWEVER, there are some that only have a light. This should give you some inspiration.

Possible I have a jar tank all it requires is

• Bubbler
• Live rock
• Little bit of sand
• Aiptasia anemone
• Pods/bristle worms
• Light
• Macroalgae

Yeah, jar reefs have been well established to be completely feasible, more so than traditional reef tanks, due to costs. What I was curious about is if the air pump could be removed, but obviously that's not possible, unless I remove the shrimp, and then it just becomes a pico display refugium.

Yours look great btw, always loved jar reefs under one gallon

***anyone here who speaks French, you should definitely link us with them somehow as a friendly exchange / reference site. When they see the volume and quality work of rtr they’ll appreciate. It’s a fun place to practice French I’ve been told, a few people off nano-reef.com really did take up convos there when I linked them once.

Use a language converter and post your tanks there too, it’s fun to reef internationally

I have fond memories of watching a tiny 2g reef many years ago at a LFS. It was run purely on a tiny limewood airstone tube in the back and was beautiful with mature coral/inverts/macro. As far as "no" tech? I doubt those results could be achieved. But as to "super low tech"? Most definitely.
