I recently upgraded my tank to a bigger one. I had a feather duster of a pretty good size. 1.5” diameter feathers. I had put it in the sand but it had eventually attacked to a rock and I wasn’t aware. I picked it out to transfer and the casing came off. I put it in new aquarium and it disappeared. I noticed it in the AIO sump. It’s feathers out but it’s body in tact. It seems skinnier. Not sure if dead. Do you think it can survive without its casing?

IME with them;

Sometimes they crawl from their casing and build new casings as the worm can build a new transparent one in as little as a few hours and it will coat the tube with sand and detritus over a matter of a few days from the substrate.

They will also sometimes throw their crown but regrow another.

You should have no worries.

I've had them die after this happened, and also had them make new casings as already described. I agree with burying it in the sand so it is safe.

I moved from sand to BB. It’s basically on bare glass close the skimmer. I’m afraid to move it. Also it’d be hard to move so I’ll leave it be. Do they use calcium to rebuild their casing?

I appreciate all the replies btw.

They use sand and detritus over a matter of a few days to rebuild. Having BB might not work so well considering this. I do not know if one could have a Tupperware container with some sand to coat the new casing or not.

Thanks. I have a ton of live sand. I’ll make a separate section for it. These things actually move around although they seem to stay put.
