I woke up yesterday morning to find my featherdusters crown on the substrate next to the tube. It was all still connected and I did not see the worm. My emerald crab had ate or crushed the very bottom of the featherdusters tube. Is my featherduster dead? Did the crab eat the worm? Or is the worm still in the tube? Was he still in the crown? I flushed the crown cause I try to keep the tank clean due to it being only 10 gallons.

Do you still see the feather part?

I've had that happen with coco worms. It's alive; they grow their feathers back.

while true - the loss of the crown is a sign of stress.

@jeharrison,
Are you feeding the worm? and it may eventually require a decision between keeping a crab vs the feather dusters.

i had amexican red duster close 4 about 2 weeks then it opened back with a small croun then sure enough 2wks later my emerald ate the tobe now i have about 200 2-4 inch dusters almost a nucence any one heard of this ?im trying to convert that tank back to fish i set up bigger reef theese things are almost bad as aptasia.(help)

I would just see what happens. It can take awhile for it to regenerate the crown. The crab may have been stressing it out causing it to shed the crown.

I had one that did that and I freaked out too. But, I just left it alone and it regrew the crown in about 2 weeks. Now it is doing great and looking good.

I tried to move my featherduster once, and he went out the backside and I was left with just the tube in my hand. I left the tube in just in case he decided to go back to it, but he didnt. Ended up a week or so later remaking the tube and he has been happy. Its really cool seeing the tube get made watching it go from 1/4 inch to an inch and etc etc they use mucus and the sand substrate to make the tube.

It grew the crown back in a week or 2. Was going great till the other day when it threw the crown I think cause the mantis shrimp messed with it, when I looked later the tube was gone....... I haven't seen it since but did move the mantis to a 10 gallon tank by himself
