I have been putting a clam on the half shell in for my valentini puffer. He picks at it a little but seems uninterested. The shell is always picked clean though so I assume he is getting some and other critters are cleaning up the leftovers. Should I be pulling out the half shells or leave them in the tank. I am not sure of the pros and cons of this other than some half shells on the sand.

Regular puffers yes, not so much valentini
Mysis shrimp
Spirulina brine shrimp
Small plankton

Krill

I have been dropping the clam in maybe once per week but feeding mysis about every 2 days. He seems to really like the pellet food I alternate in with the frozen. I was just worried that his teeth may not be getting adequate wear from the mysis.

They have different needs from large puffers
They eat smaller foods and don’t need to wear down clam like teeth which they don’t have

That is good to know I was under the impression that they had continually growing teeth that had to worn down still. I will keep rotating his food then between the mysis, krill and pellets. He seems very happy go lucky; had it about 3 weeks so far. Picture was from 2 weeks ago I think he is already a little bigger.

That's a beautiful fish. I do have the same question about leaving the shells in. I feed clams to my porcupine puffer regularly and just leave the shells in. I assumed it would just become additional substrate but am I wrong? Does anyone know of any pros and cons of this?

You can add these shells as decor and some who lose their clams leave shell in the tank. Should be fine
