I recently got my first spongivorous angelfish (have Genicanthus), a small but adult Majestic angelfish. I've been feeding him a slurry of Hikari mega-marine angel, PE mysis, arctic pods, and fish eggs. I'm curious though if adding live sponges to my tank would help supplement his diet. Being in the Tampa Bay area, there's no shortage of sponges. My only concern is would these sponges start allelopathic warfare after getting chomped on by an angel?

I might harvest some sponges, freeze them just to be safe, then chop some up to see if he likes it. Majestics fare well on the common aquarium foods, I'd add some algae to the mix, try Hikara mega algae. My angels love live black worms. I add Brightwell Angelixir to their food once a week, it's a supplement especially for spongivores.

I’ve always supplemented my large angels with various angel formulas (frozen). Both hikari and ocean nutrition have angel formulas with sponge added. My idols have also enjoyed these through the years.

I have had to have my local LFS special order these to keep them in stock as I was almost the sole purchaser of both.
