Is it ok for a Scopas Tang to eat Chaeto? I had a couple pieces escape into my display from my hang on back fuge. He was gobbling it up like Spaghetti. Kinda funny to watch. I assume it's fine since they eat Nori. I would rather feed some of the chaeto to him rather than just throw the overgrowth in the trash.

I’m sorry I find that crazy! Does the tang eat frozen and enough nori?
Yes the Tang and the rest of my fish get plenty of food everyday. I just like to supply a varied diet. So if I can throw in some chaeto and it's OK for them to eat it.Why not? Basically, it's free fish food.

So you’re telling me. The food that is naturally found in the ocean, which they naturally eat, is the best for them?

Go figure. How crazy is that.
What are you really trying to say here?

Algae turf scrubbers grow a turf algae that a lot of fish are supposed to eat. I don’t have any herbivore fish and I feel like it’s a waste throwing this stuff out every week. Anyone running an ats and feeding this algae?

What type of HOB refugium are you currently using? I'm considering adding one as well as im battlig high nitrates / phospates and no space for sump? Has it worked well for you? And also worried about my tangs eating chaeto that might leak into the tank.

The hang on back refugium I am using is a one that I made myself. I used a Aquaclear 70 HOB filter. I purchased a intank media basket for the Aquaclear 70. The intank media basket directs the water flow through 3 chambers. The first chamber is filled with filter floss to keep debris from collecting in the Cheato. The second chamber is filled with bio media balls in a mesh bag. The third chamber is where the Cheato is grown. I bought a Reef Casa Nova LED grow light from March at fragbox in Toronto, CA. I used double sided tape to attach the light to the outside of the AquaClear. I bought a Kasa smart wifi outlet to automate the photo period. I run the grow light opposite the tanks lighting schedule. It turns on at 8 pm and off at 7 am. To keep light spill to a bare min. I covered the Aquaclear with black duct tape. I have been running this DIY refugium for almost a year. It grows cheato very well. I also use Brightwell Aquatics Chaeto gro on an auto doser to replace the trace elements the Cheato removes from the saltwater. I dose 2ml every day. I made a little video clip where I show off my creation. If you are interested in seeing it send me a PM with your email and I will send it.

I have a sump and I'm still a huge fan of HOB everything (I use HOB media reactors, AND an HOB skimmer), and I ran an HOB refugium for a year or so. I've also used the Phytotank macro-algae reactor, which is basically the same thing except that it sits outside your tank, and you'll need a pump and tubing to connect to your system. Bonuses to the phytotank reactor are that it's pretty much impossible for anything bigger than a copepod to leak out into your main tank, you can put the reactor anywhere (within reason) outside your tank, and the big glass jar magnifies everything inside it just a wee bit so it's easier to watch copepods.

Pretty much anything can work as a refugium though, you just need a container with running water and a light. If I build another refugium in the future, it will be in a 5g bucket or small glass tank connected by tubing to main system.
