I was reading up on puffers and eels and I know I can use clams from the supermarket. Quick question though. I live an hour away from the long Island sound and a buddy has a beach house. Can I just use the clams and snails I pull off the rock to feed my fish? I figure if I put them in a bucket of saltwater for a day or two like everyone else does with feeder clams they should be fine. I'll be able to stock up and freeze a bunch and I'm thinking free food for the summer months! anyone else live by the shore and feed the snails and clams they can find?

Of course you can use fresh seafood. Would it somehow be better if you bought it from a store?

Reminds me of an office party I had one time. I invited my platoon over and the main course was chicken; it required about 15 chickens. Well, about half of those chickens were ones that I raised. After the meal a WM sergeant heard that some of the chickens were from my flock. She went into the bathroom and puked and she hardly would talk to me for a year after that. She had to a little, I was her senior. I tried to reason with her that my chickens were probably better than store bought chickens because I know that they haven't had any antibiotics or growth hormones and I know what they've eaten. Didn't work, in her mind the only edible chickens come from the store. Rant over.

Great story and great news! Looks like some 5 gallon buckets will be full of some fresh snails!

I
have been feeding
clams from
the Sound for 40 years, no problems yet except that
I eat most of them before the fish get any

I used to be a full time long handler. Ate clams for lunch many times, gotta keep up your energy.
