No, it is not. If you feel you need to feed pods you can use pellets or flakes which are much cheaper and pods eat them. They do not need or even eat phytoplankton.
Pods will multiply depending on how much food there is, but any food will do. They are not picky and you can't even stop them from reproducing as long as you have enough food in the tank. They normally live on uneaten food that the fish leave so there is normally no need to feed them directly.

I go to Aquarium Village in Westbury but it is a ways from Stonybrook. That is a little far out and I am not sure what is out there

Is there any proof that copepods don't eat phyto?.
I've been breeding my own pods in their own tank for the last couple of years and all they have ever been fed is a daily dose of phyto. There is no other food source in the tank so i don't know what they are eating if this is true.
This isn't a dig at yourself, i am genuinely curious.

I think they will eat anything but as for proof, no. I have no proof of that but I have proof that phyto is expensive and they will eat flakes, pellets or Cheerios. If phyto is working for you, keep feeding them phyto

Thanks for the reply Paul, i do make my own phyto but it can be a pain if a culture goes bad. Now i know they will eat just about anything then you may have just saved me a lot of time and messing about.
