Feeding Frozen Food

Is there any reason frozen food should be defrosted right before feeding? Can I lets say defrost a bottle worth, mixed with either RODI water or fresh SW, and store in a fridge?

I keep frozen thawed in a fridge for 1 - 2 days max. I've read of people keeping it longer but I have no need to thaw a week's worth and am not sure what is actually recommended as being safe. I just thaw and feed and toss remainder in the fridge. I do not rinse or store in water.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Is there reason why you chose 2 days only and then you discard the remainder?

No I don't discard it, I feed it all. I feed from flat packs so some times I thaw more than is needed for one day since I can't actually measure like you can when feeding cubes.

i mean at the end of the day once it's thawed it'd be the exact same as keeping raw fish in your fridge. If i buy a filet of fish from the grocery store it gets pretty funky if you push it past a couple of days.

Salt naturally prevents a lot of bacterial growth, can that not play a factor here, especially with refrigeration in the dark?

I've left a cube to thaw in my fridge before and it definitely didn't preserve well in that instance. I suppose you could start with one cube and decide if it will work for you.

I agree with you about just letting it sit out, it's the same concern as fresh fish sitting in the fridge more than 2 days. But what I am suggesting is keeping it in a bottle full of salt water. Think cured salmon, sits in a fridge for weeks if not longer, and is still preserved.

when i thaw my food it's preceded by grabbing a scoop of tank water for it to break apart in. The same practice was used in the one that went funky.

That makes sense. I wasn't suggesting using tank water, tanks are full of bacteria. I was suggesting using clean water.

I think I'm the only one that pulls a blister pack from the freezer and just feeds the tank the whole thing. I hold it between my fingers and some of the fish swim right up to me in my hand. I don't let it float around so it's just thawing between my fingers.

I am trying to make it easier for folks that help me out when I travel.
