I've been thawing out my Hikari Mysis cubes in TW then dumping that into a fish net and then pouring TW on top the rinse. Is this process necessary? I'm wondering if the smaller particles I'm filtering out would be beneficial to the corals?

Thanks in advance

I don't rinse mine, I remember reading somewhere that the [negative] affects of not rinsing the food is negligible in terms of nutrients. I also don't get any clouding, and sometimes i'll even put a chunk of mysis into my tank while frozen and watch the fish pick it apart while it floats.

I think that rinsing the frozen food is an old practice that everyone has just been doing for a long time and it's been passed from reefer to reefer. [IMO]

Not totally necessary, some folks just throw the cube in the tank and let the fish go at it with the return pumps turned off. If it's a low grade food, like stuff you buy at Petsmart or something, I would rinse it because there's not as much quality control with those foods and there may be some nasty stuff in the water that they froze the food in. If it's something like LRS reef frenzy, I don't rinse at all since those foods go through extensive quality control screenings and are also supposed to be good enough for human consumption.

I always rinse, but I think it's just an old habit. I use PE Mysis, so i know it's clean, but I rinse none the less. I also prefer the food to be thawed and rinsing thaws it pretty quick.

No reason to rinse. The amount of phosphate in the fluid is insignificant compared to what's in the food. Rinsing also eliminates some of the small particles that might benefit my filter feeders. I thaw by itself (takes about 15 minutes) so I can get it spread more evenly throughout the tank. If I just threw the unthawed cube in the pigs would get it all. :-)

I always rinse out of habit and always wondered if this was necessary. Great thread. Guess I don't have to rinse anymore !

I’m way to lazy to rinse the food. I will cut a cube in half while frozen and just hold it in the tank and rub it with my fingers until it’s gone or until a hungry fish gets it from me hahah

I was told Rinsing was not necessary. I was also told to pre prep my feedings by adding 4 drops of each lugol"s solution (both from Brightwell Aquatics) and garlic then freeze in small cups in order to help fish immune system. I do 20 at a time takes ten minutes. Then throw in the fridge the night before feeding as i use the thawed one. I have been doing it for a month with no problems. Has anyone heard of this?
