with the addition of an overflow box, when i feed, the food seems to just go over to the overflow down to the sump, iam using spectrum small round food the fish love it...is it ok to stop and start the return pump during feeding

Any food that tends to float I just moisten with tankwater before feeding to keep it from going down the overflow -- I put it in a plastic spoon and squirt tankwater on it. I guess you could turn off your pump for a minute, but that seems like it would be more touble and also disruptive to your system.

If you are feeding flakes one of those little tools might help you. You can get them for cheap at Petco etc...

It prevents the flakes from floating around and they start to sink once they are moisten. Of course your fish will figure out very quickly where the food is and hang out below the feeder when they know it is feeding time...
