I have been around the hobby for some time but always with a partner in crime. I am now without my partner and feel completely lost with my tank. The tank is making a lot of noise from the overflow (either sucking too much water down or not enough) not sure. I do not know how to fix this problem. Can anyone help?

This is what is happening - the water level is going below the black pipe on the right of the picture

I tried to upload a video but it wouldn’t let me - this happens no matter what the water level is - trust me I have tried that.
are you able to upload to youtube then send us a link or can you describe the plumbing in the tank and explain where the water is going

If the water level is normal , and nothing is lodged in the overflow I would suspect it’s normal ..

Is it quieter then normal in the same room as the tank ?

I know my overflow is loud but I never noticed it until I did a video of the tank running

Yeah Ive got a couple tanks that i thought where fairly quite till one day I listened now they always sound loud no matter what

If the water level is going below the pipe, you need to adjust the flow rate so that it's steady. If you have drilled a hole in the top of the pipe (in the cap) you can make it larger for faster flow or you can glue in a small valve that will let you make adjustments. You can also adjust the rate on your return. You just want to be able to equalize the rate at which the water goes into your sump and is pumped back into the tank. Part of that is the air flow out of the pipe (is it a durso set up? I can't tell from the picture). More airflow means faster water flow and vice versa. So it's a mix of water volume, pump speed, and flow out of the tank.

Do you have a valve - between your overflow and your sump? IF you do - this can become 'clogged' and cause changes in levels in your overflow. OR - the pipe itself going down to the sump - can become clogged - resulting again - in different levels causing more noise. Can you take a full picture of your overflow - all of the equipment? From the top?

Can you see where water is going down into the sump - is there one tube and a secondary one - or only one tube?

I think I’m just going to take the tank down. I don’t know the answers to any of these questions. I was so confident when I had someone to share the hobby with but those days are gone. Thank you for you help it’s just too overwhelming.

Is there a valve - a knob - between where your water goes through your overflow - and your sump?

I would suggest before you tear down anything (unless you want to) - you check with a local LFS - that could possibly come out and help?

This is easy if you’re feeling up to working through this .

it could just be there isn’t as much back brand noise and you’re noticing it more ?
Does it seam to run through the overflow. Through the sump and back return to the display tank ?

or perhaps it’s too much of a reminder of the shared once was hobby ?

deciding if it’s your interest , if wanting to keep it running is what you want to do .
